Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
