Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The real advancement in his skills began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently compete against each other. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his cunning thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. Howard headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
