Hiding Tells

Do you ever acquire that itch? The itch to bet, to head to the nearest betting house, to find a superior stakes casino game of Texas hold’em, to sit at a Black jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I love to scratch it.

I also really like to watch folks bet. No two poker faces seem identical. When I gamble I like to think I put on a poker face which is impassable. Except I know I’ve specific gestures. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I play poker or Black-jack. And then I chain smoke. But I chain smoke whether I am succeeding or losing, no matter if I have a very good hand or bad.

I once wagered in the weekly poker game. The game was constantly five card draw. There was a man who wagered with us each and every week who usually wore a hat. When he was dealt a good hand, subconsciously, he would begin touching and playing with his hat. Pointless to say, he never won.

The greatest poker gambler I ever saw was a guy who produced far more movements and gestures at a poker table than anybody I had ever met. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Always an high priced suit and tie, boots shined and nails trimmed. He was diligent in this manner. And he was generally brushing his pants or holding his hands or stacking his chips in neat little piles.

I use to analyze him for hours. I would tried to see if I could notice his tell. Choosing fuzz off his shirt- did this imply he was bluffing? Arranging his chips within a short pile – did this mean he had a excellent hand?

Many years later I bumped into him inside a bar in Chicago, il and we had a drink. I asked him if he have been aware of all those actions he created or if they have been unconscious. He informed me that just about every individual thing he did at a poker table was intentional. He said that everyone is always checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are attempting to notice the the tell.

So his method was to give them lots to assume about. His reasoning was if they were thinking about him choosing a piece of lint off his vest and what it meant they certain were not pondering about their cards.

His method was diversion. And it worked for him. Never give up a technique that works for you.
